The Big Brew
Saturday July 12th 2008

A Traidcraft initiative to help us work for ‘Fairtrade Diocese’ status by

promoting and encouraging the use of Fairtrade products
attracting media coverage
further raising awareness of the Fairtrade Mark
In London Diocese this also helps us to achieve London Challenge 5c, to become a Fairtrade Diocese.  It’s also a great outreach opportunity.

It works like this:

1. On Saturday 12th July churches throughout the Diocese are invited to put on a social event

2. You must call your event The Big Brew

Under that name, there is scope for a huge variety of events which involve inviting people from outside the church to have a free cup of Fairtrade tea or coffee.  Ideas might include

car wash

drop-in at the church
to look around

concert

fete

garden party

flower festival

cream tea

Big Brew breakfast

BBQ

games event

treasure hunt

beetle drive

Or simply a coffee morning with some home made cakes for sale?

You may charge for the event or raise funds through stalls etc, but the Fairtrade tea and coffee must be free
You might want to link up with neighbouring churches to host an event together with a bigger impact in a strategic location

3. It is an outreach event for the churches, so outsiders must be invited Information about Fair Trade should be available at the place where the Big Brew Fairtrade tea and coffee are being served

4. The more churches take part, the more people will be really aware of a big event taking place

5. Traidcraft provides discounted catering packs and Big Brew posters and flyers.  To order these, download a Big Brew order form

The scale of the event is entirely up to the individual church – the benefit is that all the churches are doing something for their community on the same day. It generates fun, a sense of togetherness and promotes Fairtrade both within the church and in the wider community, as we work together to become a Fairtrade Diocese

The success of individual church events will be based on the numbers that attend – resulting from the church’s own publicity, but also by general press and media coverage within the Diocese

Success for the Diocese will lie in your enjoyment in taking part, and the number of churches participating in sharing with their community the importance to the producers of Fair Trade

The Fairtrade Foundation has leaflets and posters about Fairtrade; bunting, T-shirts, aprons, balloons and lots more
