Go Bananas event 6-7 March 2009
 
St Andrew's Fulham Fields runs a weekly lunch for homeless people, and held a Go Bananas event with them. 72 banana smoothies were eaten, and the congregation ate a further 200 (left)

Fairtrade Fortnight 2009

A number of events took place in and around the Diocese during Fairtrade Fortnight, including a campaign stall in the Sainsbury's
at Chiswick, where lots of leaflets were handed out, and a Fairtrade stall (twice!) at St Andrew's Enfield Town

Aiming to encourage our churches to move forward with Fairtrade

The programme included Barbara Crowther of the Fairtrade
Foundation who spoke of the progress of, and challenges
to, the Fairtrade movement, and the nitty-gritty of promoting Fairtrade in our parishes which was discussed in smaller workshops.  There were of course Fairtrade refreshments, a demonstration Fairtrade stall, and plenty of resources to hand.

St Aldhelms Silver Street went bananas on 15th February 2009, with a Ready Steady Cook session, challenging people to cook something with Fairtrade ingredients. They had spiced pineapple cake, bread pudding and chocolate sponge squares. The money raised went towards their Lent appeal. It was great fun, and finished with eating Fairtrade bananas


St Michaels Bedford Park
hosted a Fairtrade Winetasting on Tuesday September 15th 2009, on behalf of Chiswick Churches for Justice and Peace. Harriet Lamb, the executive director of the Fairtrade Foundation, attended, as well as local restaurateurs who are being encouraged to stock Fairtrade wines. May Day 2008
The Diocese of London Fairtrade Campaign joined in with the May Day celebration of Fairtrade and local food at the Royal Exchange 

A real carnival atmosphere and beautiful sunshine helped to draw Cityworkers away from their desks.  Volunteers gave away around 800 flyers and even more squares of Divine chocolate and sips of Fairtrade wine. Live music came from RumHoney and Louis Cole, and there were Fairtrade stalls and lots of samples

St Peter's Church, Staines held their usual Traidcraft stall and then had a special Fairtrade presentation at their "Heaven at 11" service for families with young children, on Sunday 24 February 2008.  The focus was on banana growers in Ecuador, and how the Fairtrade premium helps them

 


The City of London's Square Mile
joins Sunderland as joint 300th Fairtrade Town   Congratulations to all in businesses, community organizations, schools and faith groups who worked hard to make this happen.  Revd George Bush of St Mary-le-Bow church and chairman of the City campaign steering group celebrates at the Barbican 
 
Ealing Fairtrade group
stall at the Ealing summer festival had a pledge tree, with opportunities for people to attach their pledges, both small and large - anything from promising to buy one Fairtrade item a month to changing their workplace to using Fairtrade regularly

St Michael and All Angels Church
promoted Fairtrade Recycle Bag Holders at the Bedford Park Festival in Chiswick in July 2008.  With the festival's aims to recycle 100% of all rubbish, this stall featured Bag Holders, and the Bangladeshi group making them.  People running the stall made a point of talking about trade justice and the benefits of fair trade
 
 


Fairtrade at Stokefest
in Clissold Park on Sunday 10th June 2008

A stall run by members of local churches in the Highbury/Hackney area, including St Mary's Stoke Newington and St Augustine's Highbury.  A busy, noisy afternoon


Chiswick Churches for Justice and Peace, including St Michael and All Angels, Bedford Park, hosted a meeting with the Fairtrade Foundation and The Rainforest Alliance in October 2007.  Further information here


Fairtrade chocolate fair at St Augustine's Highbury on March 11th 2007, highlighting the issue of child labour on cocoa farms in West Africa. We used the story Chaga and the Chocolate Factory to promote the Fairtrade Mark as a guarantee that a product is traffik-free.



 
Casildo Quispe, a brazil nut producer from the rainforest of Bolivia, met with Ann Keen MP, and members of Chiswick Churches for Justice and Peace on March 2nd 2007. Casildo explained clearly the benefits of Fairtrade to his community. The evening concluded with brazil nuts and a wine tasting of Sainsbury’s Fairtrade wine


Richmond Fairtrade Steering Group hosted Fairtrade promotional stalls in three branches of Sainsbury's on Saturday 3rd March 2007, including this one in Hampton Hill

 



 
 


St Mary le Bow becomes the first Fairtrade Church in the City

Together with the Corporation of London and Aviva they organised a Fairtrade breakfast for City businesses who want to switch to Fairtrade. About 80 people heard presentations from Aviva, KPMG, the Fairtrade Foundation and a Ghanaian cocoa representative from the Divine chocolate company.

The cocoa representative is also visiting St Paul’s and Sir John Cass Schools.
