Why should we be a Fairtrade Church?

Some thoughts from people involved...

Having a Fairtrade certificate reveals something of the heart of a church to its community: a Fairtrade certificate on an external noticeboard lets passers-by know that we do more than talk about justice – we try to do it too - in our daily lives as we shop

Displaying a Fairtrade Church certificate outside the church is a practical response that speaks volumes. A theological response is that these certificates are ‘an outward sign of an inner state.’

If you don’t use Fairtrade you are contributing to the poverty of the world

The secret to any Fair Trade or Trade Justice campaign is to be ready to play a long game, with one's eye fixed firmly on the imbalance between the lifestyles of two equal 'neighbours', the consumer and the producer; everything else (except perhaps environmental considerations), considerations of economics, capitalism or not, alternative methods of achieving justice etc are all very secondary.
One of the benefits of the Christian faith is that we have the Gospel message of the Great Commandment to inspire us to see things through when obstacles appear. A wise organiser once smiled and said to me, when I was ranting about disappointing results in Justice and Peace matters, that "You just have to keep bashing on!" and that seems to be quite a realistic mindset on the whole
